When we opened the doors of Ichi語 Language School in Fukuoka, we had one simple goal — to create a place where people from all over the world could come to Japan, learn Japanese, and experience real Japanese culture. These past weeks have shown us that we’re doing exactly that.
We’ve had the privilege of welcoming students from India, Germany, Spain, Taiwan, and the United States — each with their own story, their own reasons for choosing Japan, and their own favourite memory from their time with us. Here’s a little look at what life at Ichi語 has been like.
From Beginner to Confident — The Standard Course
Our most popular program, the Standard Course, brings students together every morning for focused Japanese lessons covering grammar, conversation, reading and writing. Whether students joined us for one week or stayed for two, three or even longer, the progress we saw was remarkable.
In just one week, students who had never spoken a single word of Japanese were holding basic conversations, reading hiragana, and navigating Fukuoka’s streets with confidence. By week two and beyond, they were ordering food, asking for directions, and chatting with locals — real Japanese, in real situations.
And for those who wanted even faster progress, our Private Lessons gave them dedicated one-on-one time with their teacher — focused entirely on their personal goals, whether that was conversation, business Japanese, or exam preparation.
Culture That Goes Beyond the Classroom
One of the things that makes Ichi語 special is that learning Japanese here isn’t just about textbooks. Our Cultural Course students got to experience Japan in ways most tourists never do.
🥁 Taiko Drumming — there is nothing quite like the energy in the room when a group of international students picks up drumsticks for the first time and starts playing traditional Japanese taiko drums. Loud, powerful, and absolutely unforgettable.
⛩️ Dazaifu — we took students to one of Kyushu’s most beloved historic sites, Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine, surrounded by plum trees and centuries of history. Seeing it through the eyes of first-time visitors reminded us just how special this place is.
🥢 Chopsticks for the First Time — one of our favourite moments every week is watching students use chopsticks for the very first time. What starts as a struggle always ends in laughter, triumph, and a delicious meal.
👘 Yukata & Kimono — dressing in traditional Japanese clothing is an experience that stays with you. Our students tried on yukata and kimono, took photos, and got a real feel for Japan’s rich textile culture and traditions.
A Truly International Classroom
What makes every week at Ichi語 unique is the mix of people in the room. Students from India, Germany, Spain, Taiwan and America sitting together, learning the same language, sharing the same experiences — and becoming friends. Japanese became their common ground, and Fukuoka became their shared home for a little while.
We’ve loved every moment of it. And the best part? We already have more bookings coming in, with new students from around the world getting ready to join us.
