How Sergio From Spain Became Fluent in Japanese in 5 Weeks in Fukuoka
Lessons got him started. Real conversations and real culture got him fluent.
Many people want to become fluent in Japanese but don’t know where to begin. Sergio came to Fukuoka from Spain and studied with us for five weeks. By the end he was speaking Japanese with confidence. His story shows what happens when classroom learning meets real life.
Five weeks at Ichigo Language School
Sergio joined our school in Hakata, Fukuoka, for a five-week stay. Every weekday morning he attended class from 9:30 to 12:30, building his grammar, vocabulary, listening and speaking step by step.
But we have always believed that a classroom alone doesn’t make anyone fluent. Language only sticks when you use it with real people, for real reasons. So we made sure Sergio did exactly that.
Practising with our friends, on our own time
This is the part we are proudest of. Outside lessons, we introduced Sergio to our own friends and asked him to practise Japanese with them, in our personal time.
There was no textbook and no teacher’s voice, just normal conversations over food and drinks. Our friends spoke at natural speed, joked, and talked about everyday life. At first that can feel intimidating for a learner. But this is exactly the Japanese you hear every day, and it is what turns “student Japanese” into the real thing.
Sergio kept trying, kept making mistakes, and kept improving. Each conversation was easier than the last.
Learning the culture, not just the language
Language and culture belong together, so we also took Sergio to experience Japan beyond the classroom. We visited Oshima, where he spent time enjoying the beach and the island’s relaxed, natural atmosphere. It was a welcome break from study, and a reminder that learning Japanese is meant to be fun.
Sergio also loves shrines in Japan, and he collects goshuin, the beautiful hand-written seals that shrines give to visitors. At each shrine we visited, he added to his collection. Each seal is a small keepsake that reminds him of the place and the day.
What made these visits special is that he understood what he was seeing. We translated the history and mythology of each place for him, including the stories behind the shrines, the gods they honour and the legends tied to the land. Instead of walking past old buildings, he learned why they matter.
This also helped his Japanese. Words connected to shrines, history and tradition stuck because they were tied to real places and real stories he cared about. When you learn something you are genuinely interested in, you remember it.
What made the difference
Looking back, Sergio’s progress came from a few things working together:
1. Consistent daily lessons. Five weeks of regular classes built a strong foundation, with new material every day and plenty of review.
2. Speaking with real people. Practising with our friends removed the fear of speaking and pushed him to use Japanese naturally.
3. Cultural experiences he cared about. Sergio’s love of shrines and goshuin gave him a personal reason to learn the vocabulary, and hearing the history and mythology of places like Oshima connected language with context, which makes it much easier to remember.
4. His own attitude. Sergio was open, curious and willing to try. Students who are happy to speak and make mistakes always progress fastest.
Why five weeks works so well
Two weeks is enough to get started, but five weeks gives you time to settle into the language. You move from memorising phrases to thinking in Japanese. You stop translating in your head and start responding naturally. By the end of his stay, Sergio could hold fluent conversations, and that is a result we love to see.
